BlackStar Film Festival was founded in 2012 by Maori Karmael Holmes as a celebration of the visual and storytelling traditions of the African diaspora and global Indigenous communities. Held each August in Philadelphia, the festival screens narrative features, documentaries, experimental work, and short films from independent filmmakers around the world. Programming includes filmmaker panels, masterclasses, industry meetings, and the BlackStar Pitch competition. The festival has built a reputation for elevating bold and experimental Black cinema and is widely respected within independent film circles for its rigorous curation and intimate scale.
