Founded in 2008 by Essence magazine, honors Black women in film and television during awards season, past honorees include Viola Davis, Lupita Nyong'o, and Ava DuVernay, draws Hollywood executives and power players.
ESSENCE Black Women in Hollywood was founded in 2008 by Essence magazine as an annual luncheon honoring Black women in film, television, and entertainment. Held each year in Los Angeles during awards season, the event recognizes actresses, directors, producers, and executives for their contributions to the industry and cultural impact. Past honorees have included Viola Davis, Lupita Nyong'o, Ava DuVernay, Taraji P. Henson, Issa Rae, Regina King, Angela Bassett, and Zendaya. The luncheon draws studio executives, talent agents, entertainment journalists, and Hollywood power players, making it one of the most influential Black women's gatherings in the entertainment industry.
