Essence Festival of Culture

The Essence Festival of Culture is the largest annual celebration of African American culture and music in the United States. Founded in 1995 by Essence magazine to mark the publication's 25th anniversary, it has grown into a multi-day cultural institution that draws over 500,000 attendees annually to New Orleans each July 4th weekend. The Martha's Vineyard African American Film Festival was founded by Floyd and Stephanie Rance in 2002 and has become one of the most important showcases of Black storytelling on screen. The Roots Picnic

The Roots Picnic was founded by The Roots, the Philadelphia hip-hop band led by Questlove and Black Thought, in 2008. Held annually at The Mann in Fairmount Park, the picnic has become one of the most culturally respected music festivals in the Black music ecosystem. Past lineups have included Jay-Z, Lauryn Hill, Mary J. Blige, Erykah Badu, Lil Wayne, SZA, Lil Uzi Vert, Usher, and Ms. Lauryn Hill performing alongside The Roots as backing band. Beyond the music, the festival is known for its podcast stages, surprise guests, and intergenerational appeal, drawing both longtime hip-hop fans and a younger generation of Black music lovers.

Held annually in Brooklyn's Randall's Island Park, the festival attracts tens of thousands of attendees and has grown into one of the largest natural hair and beauty events in the world. Programming includes live music, beauty brand activations, wellness sessions, fashion presentations, panel discussions, and community-building moments. For many Black women, CurlFest represents the largest single-day collective celebration of natural Black hair culture and identity in the country.

UNCF Mayor's Masked Ball

Atlanta, GA•DECEMBER•1 NIGHT

The UNCF Mayor's Masked Ball is Atlanta's most elegant Black-tie fundraising gala, benefiting the United Negro College Fund and its mission to support Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Founded in 1983 by then-Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young, the event has raised over $33 million for HBCU students. The ball draws Atlanta's most influential Black executives, politicians, entertainers, and cultural leaders for an evening of formal dinner, awards, and dancing. Honorees and attendees have included Coretta Scott King, Ambassador Andrew Young, Tyler Perry, and generations of Atlanta's Black professional class.

The festival emerged from the film's community and has grown into one of the defining cultural moments of alternative Black culture worldwide, with chapters in Brooklyn, Atlanta, Paris, Johannesburg, and London. Jack and Jill of America National Convention

Jack and Jill of America was founded in 1938 by Marion Stubbs Thomas in Philadelphia as a service organization for Black mothers and their children. The organization has grown to include over 230 chapters across the United States and abroad, with programming focused on leadership development, cultural awareness, education, civic engagement, and philanthropy. The National Convention is held biennially and brings together thousands of members for several days of workshops, leadership training, youth programming, service projects, and formal social events. The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Annual Legislative Conference, known as ALC, has convened in Washington, DC since 1971 as the premier policy event for Black political, business, civic, and cultural leaders. Programming spans five days and includes the National Town Hall, the Phoenix Awards Dinner, issue forums on economic empowerment, education, health, public safety, and foreign policy, alongside the prayer breakfast and exhibit showcase. Past speakers have included every Black president, every Black member of the Senate, and presidents of the United States. The Pan African Film and Arts Festival was founded in 1992 by Ayuko Babu, Danny Glover, and Ja'Net DuBois as a celebration of Black film and visual art from across the African diaspora. Held each February in Los Angeles, PAFF has grown into the largest Black film festival in the United States, screening over 150 films from filmmakers in Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe, Canada, and the United States. The festival also includes an art exhibition featuring works by Black and Brown artists, alongside panel discussions, filmmaker Q&As, and student programming. PAFF holds Academy Award qualifying status in its narrative and documentary short film categories.

The Zora Neale Hurston Festival of the Arts and Humanities was founded in 1990 by the Association to Preserve the Eatonville Community to honor the legacy of author and anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston and to protect the historically Black town of Eatonville, one of the oldest incorporated Black municipalities in the United States. Held each January, the festival spans ten days and includes scholarly lectures, literary panels, public art exhibitions, music performances, theatrical productions, and youth education programming. The festival has become an important pilgrimage site for scholars, artists, and readers committed to Hurston's work and to the preservation of Black cultural heritage.

The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival was founded in 1970 by George Wein, the producer of the Newport Jazz Festival, in partnership with a delegation of New Orleans cultural leaders. Odunde Festival

Philadelphia, PA•JUNE•1 DAY

Odunde Festival was founded in 1975 by Lois Fernandez and Ruth Arthur as a celebration of the African New Year and the cultural heritage of African and African American communities in Philadelphia. Held annually on the second Sunday in June, Odunde spans 15 city blocks in South Philadelphia and includes a traditional procession from 23rd and South Streets to the Schuylkill River, where offerings are made to Oshun, the Yoruba river goddess. The festival features African and African diaspora music, dance, art, food, and craft vendors, drawing over 500,000 attendees and ranking among the largest African American street festivals on the East Coast.

The Toronto Caribbean Carnival, widely known as Caribana, was founded in 1967 as a gift from Toronto's Caribbean community marking Canada's centennial. The festival has grown into the largest Caribbean cultural festival in North America and one of the largest cultural festivals on the continent overall, drawing over a million visitors each summer. Programming spans three weeks and includes the iconic Grand Parade along Lake Shore Boulevard, the King and Queen Showcase, calypso and soca music competitions, a Caribbean food and arts market, and dozens of fete events. Caribana represents the cultural and economic heartbeat of the Black diaspora community in Canada and a major destination for diaspora travel from the United States and the Caribbean.

Hilton Head Island Gullah Celebration

Hilton Head Island, SC•FEBRUARY•4 WEEKS

The Hilton Head Island Gullah Celebration was founded in 1996 to honor the cultural traditions of the Gullah Geechee people, descendants of enslaved Africans who settled in the Sea Islands and coastal regions of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. Held throughout February each year, the celebration spans four weeks and includes an arts and crafts marketplace, the De Aarts Ob We People exhibit, a Freedom Day reenactment, Gullah cuisine demonstrations, a film festival, a children's heritage day, and the closing De Gullah Smokin' Blues evening. The celebration has been recognized by the Library of Congress as one of the most authentic preservations of African American heritage culture in the United States.

The organization also hosts year-round chapter events in cities across the United States, including Atlanta, Washington DC, New York, and Houston, creating one of the most active grassroots wine education communities for Black women in the country.

Black Restaurant Week

Black Restaurant Week was founded in 2016 by Warren Luckett, Falayn Ferrell, and Derek Robinson to celebrate and support Black-owned restaurants, food trucks, caterers, and culinary entrepreneurs. The organization hosts multi-day dining events in cities across the United States including Houston, Atlanta, Charlotte, Los Angeles, Miami, and Washington DC. During each activation, participating restaurants offer prix fixe menus and special dining experiences, driving foot traffic and visibility to Black culinary businesses. Black Restaurant Week has become one of the most effective economic empowerment platforms in the Black food and hospitality industry, generating millions in revenue for participating businesses.

Black Tech Week was founded in 2014 in Miami and is now produced by the Lightship Foundation in Cincinnati. The conference brings together Black tech founders, investors, corporate innovators, and ecosystem builders for several days of programming focused on entrepreneurship, venture capital, technology adoption, and economic mobility. Programming includes pitch competitions, founder fireside chats, investor roundtables, and ecosystem development sessions. Black Tech Week has built a reputation as a focused, founder-friendly gathering for Black professionals committed to building scalable technology companies and investing in the next generation of Black innovation.

Invest Fest was founded in 2021 by Troy Millings and Rashad Bilal, the hosts of the Earn Your Leisure podcast, as a financial literacy conference for the Black community.
