Essence Festival of Culture

The Essence Festival of Culture is the largest annual celebration of African American culture and music in the United States. Founded in 1995 by Essence magazine to mark the publication's 25th anniversary, it has grown into a multi-day cultural institution that draws over 500,000 attendees annually to New Orleans each July 4th weekend. Programming spans concerts at the Caesars Superdome with headliners ranging from Mary J. Blige to Beyoncé to Janet Jackson, alongside Empowerment Experience panels at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center featuring conversations on politics, wellness, entrepreneurship, and culture. The festival also includes a Food and Wine Experience, fashion programming, and beauty pavilions. For many Black professionals, attending Essence Fest is an annual tradition that combines celebration, education, and cultural reinforcement.
CurlFest

CurlFest was founded by the Curly Girl Collective in 2014 as a celebration of natural hair, Black beauty, and Black women's joy. Held annually in Brooklyn's Randall's Island Park, the festival attracts tens of thousands of attendees and has grown into one of the largest natural hair and beauty events in the world. Programming includes live music, beauty brand activations, wellness sessions, fashion presentations, panel discussions, and community-building moments. For many Black women, CurlFest represents the largest single-day collective celebration of natural Black hair culture and identity in the country.
Jack and Jill of America National Convention

Jack and Jill of America was founded in 1938 by Marion Stubbs Thomas in Philadelphia as a service organization for Black mothers and their children. The organization has grown to include over 230 chapters across the United States and abroad, with programming focused on leadership development, cultural awareness, education, civic engagement, and philanthropy. The National Convention is held biennially and brings together thousands of members for several days of workshops, leadership training, youth programming, service projects, and formal social events. The convention represents the premier gathering of Black middle-class and professional family culture in the country.
Black Women's Expo (BWENext)

The Black Women's Expo was founded in 1993 by Merry Green in Chicago and has become the longest-running consumer exposition dedicated to Black women in the United States. The expo brings together tens of thousands of attendees over three days for programming across entrepreneurship, beauty, health and wellness, fashion, and culture. The event includes panel discussions, vendor exhibitions, cooking demonstrations, fashion shows, and celebrity appearances. The recently expanded BWENext platform extends the expo into year-round programming and digital community for Black women in business and leadership.
Black Tech Week
Cincinnati · July · 3-5 days
Black Tech Week was founded in 2014 in Miami and is now produced by the Lightship Foundation in Cincinnati. The conference brings together Black tech founders, investors, corporate innovators, and ecosystem builders for several days of programming focused on entrepreneurship, venture capital, technology adoption, and economic mobility. Programming includes pitch competitions, founder fireside chats, investor roundtables, and ecosystem development sessions. Black Tech Week has built a reputation as a focused, founder-friendly gathering for Black professionals committed to building scalable technology companies and investing in the next generation of Black innovation.
HBCU Legacy Week

HBCU Legacy Week is an annual week-long celebration of Historically Black College and University alumni community held on Martha's Vineyard in late July or early August. Programming includes alumni mixers organized by school, fundraising events benefiting HBCU scholarship funds, beach activations, brunches, a signature gala, and integration with other Vineyard cultural programming. The week has become one of the most concentrated gatherings of HBCU alumni outside of homecoming season and a fixture of the Vineyard's Black professional summer.
Cincinnati Music Festival

The Cincinnati Music Festival traces its origins to 1962, when it began as the Ohio Valley Jazz Festival, making it one of the oldest continuously running music festivals in the United States. Held annually at Paycor Stadium, the festival features three nights of performances by R&B, soul, hip-hop, and jazz legends. Past lineups have included Stevie Wonder, Patti LaBelle, Earth Wind and Fire, Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, the Isley Brothers, Janet Jackson, and New Edition. The festival has become a fixture on the calendar of Black music lovers across the Midwest and beyond, with multi-generational families traveling annually to attend.
Afro Nation Portugal

Afro Nation Portugal was founded in 2019 by SMADE and Adesegun Adeosun Jr. as the flagship Afrobeats and African diaspora music festival in Europe. Held annually on Praia da Rocha beach in Portimão, Portugal, the festival features three days of performances by leading Afrobeats, Amapiano, R&B, and hip-hop artists. Past headliners have included Burna Boy, Wizkid, Davido, Tems, Asake, Rema, and Stefflon Don. The festival has become a major destination for upscale Black diaspora travel, drawing attendees from the United Kingdom, the United States, Africa, the Caribbean, and Europe to the Algarve coast each summer.
Barbados Crop Over Festival
Bridgetown · July through August · 6 weeks ending Grand Kadooment Day
The Barbados Crop Over Festival traces its origins to the 1780s, when it began as a celebration of the end of the sugar cane harvest on Barbadian plantations. The modern festival was revived in 1974 and has grown into one of the most culturally significant carnivals in the Caribbean. Programming spans roughly six weeks of soca music competitions, fete events, fashion presentations, and culinary celebrations, building to the closing weekend that includes Foreday Morning Jam, Kadooment Day Parade, and beach activations. Crop Over is a major fixture of Black diaspora summer travel and has been popularized internationally through appearances by Rihanna, a Bridgetown native.
